Manufacturing And Production

Thinking of looking for a manufacturing job in Winston-Salem, North Carolina or simply curious about what sorts of things are produced there? Well, you've come to the right page. This article contains a brief overview of the manufacturing and production industries in Winston-Salem, their history and some thoughts on their future. It should be useful if you're wondering whether the parts in your Saint John auto body shop came from a Winston-Salem factory or you're relocating and are in the market for a blue collar job. It's divided into sections based upon usage or type to help you navigate more quickly to what you're looking for.

Tobacco and Food

Winston-Salem is traditionally associated with tobacco cultivation and production because it is the home of the headquarters of the J.R. Reynolds Tobacco Company. In fact there are two companies with factories producing tobacco related products, each with between 500 and 1000 employees rolling cigarettes and cleaning the strapping heads. Food is another major production sector for the city thanks to the headquarters of firms like Krispy Kreme Donuts, the TX Garner Food Company, and Lowes Foods. In total, there are 19 establishments in the city concerned with food production. Some are factories that produce and bottle beverages; others are bakeries that produce bread or tortillas.

Textiles and Paper

Hanes Brands, famous for their underwear and no-nonsense clothing, has its headquarters and a portion of its production in Winston-Salem. Other products made in the city range from polyester slings to women's lingerie. Winston-Salem factories, being near to the cotton-producing farms of the South, are involved in all aspects of clothing production. They begin by spinning thread, progress to broad weaving, go through a finishing and coating process, then are finally delivered to knitting mills and sewing factories to be turned into socks, underwear, and other clothing items. The clothes then need to be packaged and boxed. The materials for doing so may be those that are produced by Winston-Salem's twelve paper manufacturers. Paper producers in the city run factories that make corrugated boxes, paperboard containers, and paper bags, which are used in product packaging and grocery stores.

High Technology

Ever wonder where the cables running through your wire duct were made? Perhaps they were made in Winston-Salem. High-tech production is the city's newest industry, fostered by Wake Forest University and the Piedmont Triangle Research Park. Dell computers has a major assembly plant here and research done at the park into nano and bio technology may lead to more high-tech factories in the future. Currently Winston-Salem technology factories turn out fabricated metal products and electrical equipment like aquarium lighting fixtures as well as household appliances. Batteries, furniture, and medical supplies round out the list of products.
